Yoga is Discretion in Action
“Yoga is discretion in action”, says Lord Kṛṣṇa Gītā (2: 50) and It is evident in every person who can successfully manage one’s life, skillfully and efficiently. It involves : 1. Understanding the external (the non-Self), 2. Knowing the Self & Īśvara, and, 3. Living one’s life by values. Once these are well assimilated, discretion in action is a natural result. He is, then, a Yogi. Śrī Swāmī Dayānanda Saraswatī, the founder Ācārya of the Ārṣa Vidyā Institutions has taught above topics on various occasions, and to varied listeners. This volume has been put together by drawing from these teachings, by amalgamating relevant material and presenting it in a structured manner. Swāmījī’s teachings touch upon the trials, tribulations and confusions experienced by us daily. The recurring adversities in our life sap our very vitality, and leave us drained mentally and psychologically. His skillful unfoldment of the concepts has given us the necessary tools and techniques of dealing with them effectively. The content of this book is structured into three parts. The first part is prescriptive in nature and provides for management of all that is around us (the external). The second part has selections explaining the understanding of the Self, Īśvara and their inter-relation. The third and concluding part advises us to aspire for living a ‘life of standards’ rather than chasing a ‘Standard of Living’. The style of language used by Swāmījī, in his teachings, has mostly been retained for its liveliness and easy comprehension. The book can be read either by randomly picking up any topic (an alphabetical index is added at the end for quick search), or by studying the entire text systematically. What is strongly advised, however, is to read it repeatedly and regularly for retaining the clarity of one’s understanding, and thereby stay on top of every situation!
